The action takes place in Spain, around 1820. 
In the center of events is the gypsy Carmen, whose actions and lifestyle hurt and change the fate of those who are close to her. Filled with the spirit of freedom and the denial of laws, Carmen enjoys the attention of men, without thinking about their feelings. 
The opera Carmen was the last work of Georges Bizet. Critics consider this work the highest point of the French composer's work.
