Основою сценічної кантати «Carmina Burana» (1936 – 1937) К. Орфа стали 24 вірші з однойменної збірки середньовічної поезії. Назва «Carmina Burana» в перекладі з латині означає «Пісні Бойерна» і відповідає назві оригінального манускрипту «Codex Buranus», який було знайдено в 1803 році в бенедиктинському монастирі Бойерн. Автори віршів – поети та ченці-втікачі, студенти та школярі, що мандрували по світу і писали латинською, старонімецькою та старофранцузською мовами.

Пісенні і оркестрові номери, що зіставлені контрастно одні одному, представляють собою різноманіття картин світу: в одних оспівуються радості життя, щастя, неприборкані веселощі, краса весняної природи, любовна пристрасть, в інших – нелегке життя ченців і мандрівних студентів, іронічне ставлення до власного життя, надія на прихильність Фортуни. Основним філософським стержнем кантати стали роздуми про те, що людина з усіма своїми маленькими радощами і журбою – лише іграшка в руках примхливої ​​долі, символом непостійності якої є Колесо фортуни, що постійно обертається.

The basis of the stage cantata "Carmina Burana" (1936 - 1937) by K. Orff was 24 poems from the collection of medieval poetry of the same name. The name "Carmina Burana" in Latin means "Songs of Boyern" and corresponds to the name of the original manuscript "Codex Buranus", which was found in 1803 in the Benedictine monastery of Boyern. The authors of the poems are fugitive poets and monks, students and schoolchildren who traveled the world and wrote in Latin, Old German and Old French.

Song and orchestra numbers, juxtaposed in contrast to each other, represent a variety of pictures of the world: in some, the joys of life, happiness, unbridled fun, the beauty of spring nature, love passion are sung, in others - the difficult life of monks and traveling students, an ironic attitude to one's own life , hope for the favor of Fortune. The main philosophical core of the cantata became reflections on the fact that a person with all his little joys and sorrows is just a toy in the hands of a capricious fate, a symbol of the impermanence of which is the constantly rotating Wheel of Fortune.
