With the "Carmina Burana" Carl Orff has created a real lighthouse in international concert life. The cantata, which premiered in Frankfurt am Main in 1937, is rooted in a collection of medieval vagabond poems from the 13th century. The elementary musical catchiness and comprehensibility and the extremely imaginative texts ensure an almost timeless radiance of this work, which has already made countless people discover the love for so-called "classical music". The famous opening and closing chorus ​“O Fortuna”, which depicts the goddess of fate as the capricious ruler of the world, is one of the most famous melodies in music history.

Years ago, as the Austrian counterpart, the state of Lower Austria commissioned the writer and music historian Michael Korth, who lives in Jaidhof, and the composer Gerald Wirth to make Austria's medieval love songs and sacred songs audible in a new way. The result, the “Carmina Austriaca”, is a rousing work that will have its world premiere in its new version in Gars. An overwhelming musical journey into the Middle Ages of Austria. Music by the oldest German-speaking minstrel Kürenberger and songs by Walther von der Vogelweide can be heard, as well as sacred monks' songs, lustful wine songs and mocking peasant songs of our ancestors.

Mit der „Carmina Burana“ hat Carl Orff einen wahren Leuchtturm im internationalen Konzertleben geschaffen. Die 1937 in Frankfurt am Main uraufgeführte Kantate wurzelt in einer Samm­lung mittel­alterlicher Vaganten­dichtungen aus dem 13. Jahrhundert. Die elementare musikalische Eingängigkeit und Fassbarkeit und die überaus phantasievollen Texte sorgen für eine geradezu zeitlose Strahlkraft dieses Werks, das bereits unzählige Menschen die Liebe zur sogenannten „klassischen Musik“ entdecken ließ. Der berühmte Ein­gangs- und Schluss­chor ​„O For­tuna“, der die Schick­sals­göt­tin als lau­nen­hafte Herr­sche­rin der Welt schil­dert, gehört zu den bekanntesten Melodien der Musikgeschichte.

Als österreichisches Pendant hat das Land Niederösterreich vor Jahren den in Jaidhof lebenden Schriftsteller und Musikhistoriker Michael Korth sowie den Komponisten Gerald Wirth damit beauftragt, Österreichs mittelalterliche Minnegesänge und geistliche Lieder neu hörbar zu machen. Das Ergebnis, die „Carmina Austriaca“, ist ein mitreißendes Werk, das in seiner Neufassung in Gars seine Uraufführung erleben wird. Eine überwältigende musikalische Reise ins Mittelalter Österreichs. Musik des ältesten deutschsprachigen Minnesängers Kürenberger und Lieder von Walther von der Vogelweide ertönen dabei ebenso wie sakrale Mönchsgesänge, lustvolle Weingesänge und spöttische Bauernlieder unserer Vorfahren.
