Jules Massenet (1842–1912) is the most prolific composer of late romanticism: he wrote 34 operas (some unfinished and unstaged). Along with Gounod, Bizet and Thomas, Massenet became the leading master of French lyric opera, and his "Manon" (1884) and "Werther" (1892), together with "La Traviata" by G. Verdi, "Eugene Onegin" by P.I. Tchaikovsky and "La Boheme" by G. Puccini defined a subtle variety of lyric-psychological drama of the second half of the 19th century. His later work amazes with activity, search and various subjects. Massenet's eclecticism is historically understandable: beautifully ending the era of romanticism in the genre of lyrical opera, he is looking for new paths leading to the 20th century.

The premiere of Cinderella by J. Massenet took place on May 24, 1899 at the Opéra-Comique (Paris). Then the performances went on in Milan, Rome, New Orleans, New York, Chicago, Brussels, but after the death of the composer, the opera was forgotten. Massenet's new life for Cinderella began in the second half of the 20th century. In this opera, a well-known children's fairy tale turns into something more: it reveals a Christian overtone. For example, the image of the Fairy is close to the image of the Mother of God. The traditional narrative of good and evil becomes a reflection on beauty, close to God, and its enemy - vulgarity.

Жюль Массне (1842–1912) – самый плодовитый композитор позднего романтизма: он написал 34 оперы (есть неоконченные и непоставленные). Наряду с Гуно, Бизе и Тома, Массне стал ведущим мастером французской лирической оперы, а его «Манон» (1884) и «Вертер» (1892) вместе с «Травиатой» Дж. Верди, «Евгением Онегиным» П.И. Чайковского и «Богемой» Дж. Пуччини определили тонкую разновидность лирико-психологической драмы второй половины XIX века. Его позднее творчество поражает активностью, поиском и разнообразными сюжетами. Эклектика Массне исторически понятна: красиво завершая эпоху романтизма в жанре лирической оперы, он ищет новые пути, ведущие в XX век.

Премьера оперы «Золушка» Ж. Массне состоялась 24 мая 1899 года в «Опера-Комик» (Париж). Затем спектакли шли в Милане, Риме, Новом Орлеане, Нью-Йорке, Чикаго, Брюсселе, но после смерти композитора опера была забыта. Новая жизнь «Золушки» Массне началась во второй половине ХХ века. В этой опере известная детская сказка превращается в нечто большее: в ней проявляется христианский подтекст. Например, образ Феи близок к образу Богоматери. Традиционный нарратив о добре и зле становится размышлением о красоте, близкой к Богу, и ее враге – пошлости.
