Naples has always been a musical city and the canzone napoletana is world famous. The most famous of the Neapolitan songs, »O sole mio«, belongs to the repertoire of almost all great tenors and the recording of Elvis Presley was number 1 on the US hit parade in 1960.
But Naples is also the cradle of Italian opera. As one of the most important musical centers in the world with enormous radiance, the city produced composers who had a decisive influence on musical Europe since the early 18th century. Alessandro Scarlatti, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Gioachino Rossini are prominent names closely linked to the Neapolitan School in the 17th and 18th centuries and the genesis of opera. The Neapolitans were also productive in the field of church music, an example of which is Pergolesi's world-famous "Stabat mater". A happy genius of art must have stood over Naples at that time, for nowhere else have so many excellent masters ever come together in one place at the same time.
