»Così fan tutte« – »That's how everyone does it«, Don Alfonso assures his friends Ferrando and Guglielmo and wants to prove to them that their fiancées Dorabella and Fiordiligi are also unfaithful if only the opportunity arises! The young men are so sure of the hearts and fidelity of their fiancées that they accept the bet and engage in an emotional confusion game, at the evil end of which the couples each indulge in each other crosswise. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte called the work a »school of lovers« in the subtitle – and thus make it clear that »Così fan tutte«, which has long been controversial since its premiere in Vienna in 1790 due to its frivolity, has an enlightening character. This ambiguity and the humorous and precise look into the confused hearts of young lovers also characterizes the light-footed staging by Andreas Kriegenburg, who lustfully quotes the aesthetics of silent film slapstick.
