Almost all of Mozart's operas are about the abysses of love - but none so exclusively as in Così fantutte. At first everything seems simple and unshakable here: Ferrando and Guglielmo love their fiancés Dorabella and Fiordiligi. The men are willing to bet that the women are loyal to them – even with Don Alfonso, who is certain that he can prove them wrong with an experiment. But what was planned as a harmless game develops into a cruel open-heart experiment, which in the end pulls the rug out from under everyone involved: because the characters have to recognize that what they think they are feeling and what they actually are feel is in painful contradiction to each other. Mozart looks deeply into the hearts of his characters, who are tossed about by their emotions; Like no other, he knows how to use his music to tell of the bewildering complexity of their emotional states. At the same time, however, Mozart is not a moralist - he does not condemn his characters, and so it becomes a music theater that presents the unfathomable in a wonderfully light and thoroughly comedic way. The extremely dense and radically contemporary production by Kirill Serebrennikov was created in 2018 under very special conditions: the Russian director was under house arrest in Moscow at the time and could not be present at the rehearsals. This did not harm the artistic expressiveness - the public and the press were enthusiastic about his directing work. This revival is a veritable new production: the French soprano Vannina Santoni takes on the role of Fiordiligi for the first time, and Samantha Hankey, the young but already internationally sought-after mezzo-soprano, can be heard for the first time as Dorabella
