Obilježavamo 210 godina rođenja Giuseppea Verdija, nesumnjivo najznačajnijeg predstavnika talijanske opere. Za njega je opera nacionalna forma glazbenog izričaja, a ljudski glas sredstvo tog izričaja. Zadržao je tradicionalnu formu talijanske opere, ali uz nove zahtjeve za libretista – savršeno stapanje teksta i glazbe kako bi se jače istaknula dramska radnja. Njegovi likovi su živa bića koji se često nađu u tragičnoj situaciji, a tako je i u operi Moć sudbine iz koje ćemo na ovom programu čuti orkestralnu uvertiru i jednu ariju. Uvertira operi Moć sudbine započinje sudbinskim motivima u limenim puhačima koji se kroz cijelu uvertiru isprepliće s motivom uzdaha u gudačima i lirskim melodijama. Završava veličanstveno, brzom codom vedroga raspoloženja. Opera je praizvedena u Sankt Peterburgu 1862. godine i otada je često na repertoaru diljem svijeta. Matija Meić uz pratnju orkestra izvest će ariju Morir! Tremenda cosa… Urna fatale iz 3. čina opere Moć sudbine. Arija je to u kojoj bariton Don Carlo govori o spremnosti na smrt. Započinje recitativom na koji se nastavlja krasna, pjevna melodija. Slijedi arija È' sogno? O realtà? iz Verdijeve posljednje i jedine komične opere Falstaff. Literarni predložak su Vesele žene Windsorske Williama Shakespeara, kojom nam poručuje: Sve je na tom svijetu tek komedija, a čovjek je rođeni šaljivac.

 

Lapadski soneti skladani su 1979. godine za bariton solo i gudački orkestar, a Boris Papandopulo posvetio ih je školi Luke Sorkočevića u Dubrovniku. Za predložak je autor odabrao lirske tekstove Ive Vojnovića i skladao četiri kolorističke tonske slike koje bi slobodno mogli nazvati zvonjelicama kao u stara vremena, kada su davni majstori uglazbljivali i izvodili svoje sonete.

 

Stjepan Šulek spada među najsvestranije umjetnike u povijest hrvatske glazbe. Bio je skladatelj, violinist, dirigent i glazbeni pedagog. Njegov glazbeni izričaj je neoklasicističkog usmjerenja i toga se drži, ostaje potpuno imun na avangardna traganja. Osma simfonija stilski je orijentirana kao sinteza barokne polifonije, klasične forme i romantičke izražajnosti. Rekli bismo da autor pokušava u slušatelju pobuditi osjećaj smirenja, težnju za ljepotom, boljitkom i srećom. Simfonija je tehnički izuzetno zahtjevna, pogotovo za gudačke sekcije orkestra. Stjepan Šulek je pravi simfoničar, odlično poznaje orkestraciju i mogućnosti pojedinih instrumenata, a to je i iskoristio.

We are celebrating the 210th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi , undoubtedly the most important representative of Italian opera. For him, opera is a national form of musical expression, and the human voice is a means of that expression. It kept the traditional form of Italian opera, but with new requirements for the librettist – a perfect fusion of text and music to emphasize the dramatic action. His characters are living beings who often find themselves in tragic situations, and so it is in the opera The Power of Destiny  , from which we will hear an orchestral overture and an aria on this program. The overture to the opera The Power of Destiny begins with fateful motifs in the brass, which are intertwined with the motif of sighs throughout the overture.in strings and lyrical melodies. It ends magnificently, with a fast coda of a bright mood. The opera was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1862 and since then it has been frequently performed around the world. Matija Meić, accompanied by an orchestra, will perform the aria Morir! Tremenda cosa... Urna fatale from Act 3 of the opera The Power of Fate. It is an aria in which the baritone Don Carlo talks about his readiness to die. It begins with a recitative followed by a beautiful, singing melody. Next is the aria  È' sogno? About reality? from Verdi's last and only comic opera Falstaff. The literary template is William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor , with which he tells us:Everything in this world is just a comedy, and man is a born joker.

 

The Lapad sonnets were composed in 1979 for baritone solo and string orchestra, and Boris Papandopulo dedicated them to the school of Luka Sorkočević in Dubrovnik. As a template, the author chose Ivo Vojnović's lyrical texts and composed four coloristic tonal paintings that could be freely called chimes like in the old days, when ancient masters set their sonnets to music and performed them.

Stjepan Šulek is one of the most versatile artists in the history of Croatian music. He was a composer, violinist, conductor and music teacher. His musical expression is of a neoclassical orientation and he sticks to it, remaining completely immune to avant-garde pursuits. The eighth symphony is stylistically oriented as a synthesis of baroque polyphony, classical form and romantic expressiveness. We would say that the author is trying to arouse in the listener a feeling of calmness, a desire for beauty, betterment and happiness. The symphony is technically extremely demanding, especially for the string sections of the orchestra. Stjepan Šulek is a real symphonist, he knows orchestration and the possibilities of individual instruments very well, and he used that.
