Written in 1897 by Edmond de Rostand and premiered at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin the same year, the play about the big-nosed, impulsive swordsman Cyrano, who wields sharp language as skillfully as he wields a rapier, is set in mid-17th-century Paris.

Compared to Rostand's play, the opera is concentrated on the spiritual world of the three main characters, the poet-soldier Cyrano, his desired Roxane, and the cadet Christian. What is left unsaid is seconded in Tamberg's music with wonderful sound passages, pauses and crescendo , creating foreboding images of the fragility and tragedy of the protagonists' dream of happiness.

There have been more than forty adaptations of the story of Cyrano de Bergerac in theater, television and elsewhere. In 2020, the National Theater London version premiered, starring James McAvoy, and in 2022, Cyrano, starring Peter Dinklage.

Did Rostand create Cyrano or did Cyrano create Rostand? There is a fragile line between the creature and the creator. It doesn't matter when one takes over from the other. Getting the message across is important.

Edmond de Rostand’i 1897. aastal kirjutatud ja samal aastal Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martinis esietendunud näidend suure ninaga impulsiivsest mõõgakangelasest Cyranost, kes valdab teravat keelekasutust sama oskuslikult kui rapiiri, leiab aset 17. sajandi keskpaigas Pariisis.
