Alberich comes up from the depths of the earth to the three daughters of the Rhine; all jestingly and teasingly despise the leprechaun. Then the Rheingold begins to shine; it appeals to Alberich. The girls mean that it serves them for pleasure and play: but he who knows how to force it into a ring can work many miracles with it, gain power and might, wealth and dominion through gold: but only he who renounces love, understand that! They laugh at him again. Then the Nibelung gets angry: he renounces love, robs the gold and kidnaps it into the depths..." (Richard Wagner, 1851)

In 1848 Wagner presented the draft “The Nibelung Myth”. After further preparatory work on the "Ring des Nibelungen" he told Franz Liszt: "I have to communicate my entire myth, according to its deepest and broadest meaning, with the greatest artistic clarity, in order to be fully understood." Starting from "Siegfried's death" he went through In this way, the myth went back to its beginnings and in 1852 it was preceded by a "great prelude": "The robbery of the Rhine gold". In the following year he tackled the composition of the "Rheingold". With "Rheingold", the Mainfranken Theater is continuing its "Ring" project, again emphasizing the independence of the individual dramas, "which should form completely independent pieces" (Wagner).
