From the depths of the Rhine, sparkles a magic gold. When the Rhinemaidens, who guard it, reject and deride Alberich's advances, the dwarf steals not only their treasure but also his terrible secret: whoever will forge a ring with this gold and renounce the love will dominate the world. Alberich does not hesitate for a second, but his omnipotence is short-lived. The supreme god, Wotan, also covets the Rhine gold, with which he intends to honor his debt to the Giants, who built him the new castle he had dreamed of for a long time. But this Valhalla, erected with great difficulty and at the cost of broken pacts, does it not symbolize the disastrous ambitions of its owner? Hasn't his power already begun to decline?  

The premiere of Das Rheingold in 1876 opened a decisive new chapter in the history of opera. From a single opening chord, a whole cosmos unfolds: that of Richard Wagner's epic tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen . The work, which is based on the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk , was to trigger an aesthetic, philosophical but above all artistic revolution, the effects of which are still felt today. 

La Monnaie challenged itself to make a new production of this cycle, spread over two seasons, starting with the Prologue: Das Rheingold . For this project, she called on two leading figures from her artistic family. The director and visual artist Romeo Castellucci goes, without any irony, straight to the heart of the Wagnerian myth, inviting each spectator to make his own reading of it. As for the musical interpretation of the conductor Alain Altinoglu, it gives the drama – a concept dear to Wagner – its full dimension.

Depuis les profondeurs du Rhin, étincelle un or magique. Lorsque les Filles du Rhin, qui en ont la garde, repoussent et tournent en dérision les avances d’Alberich, le nain leur dérobe non seulement leur trésor mais aussi son terrible secret : celui qui forgera un anneau avec cet or et renoncera à l’amour dominera le monde. Alberich n’hésite pas une seconde, mais sa toute-puissance est de courte durée. Le dieu suprême, Wotan, convoite lui aussi l’or du Rhin, avec lequel il compte honorer sa dette auprès des Géants, qui lui ont construit le nouveau château dont il rêvait depuis longtemps. Mais ce Walhalla, érigé à grand-peine et au prix de pactes rompus, ne symbolise-t-il pas les funestes ambitions de son propriétaire ? Le pouvoir de celui-ci n’a-t-il pas déjà entamé son déclin ?  

La première de Das Rheingold ouvre en 1876 un nouveau chapitre déterminant de l’histoire de l’opéra. À partir d’un seul accord d’ouverture c’est tout un cosmos qui se déploie : celui de la tétralogie épique de Richard Wagner, Der Ring des Nibelungen. L’œuvre, qui repose sur l’idéal du Gesamtkunstwerk,  allait déclencher une révolution esthétique, philosophique mais surtout artistique, dont les effets se font encore sentir aujourd’hui. 

La Monnaie s’est mise au défi de réaliser une nouvelle production de ce cycle, étalée sur deux saisons, en commençant par le Prologue : Das Rheingold. Elle a fait appel, pour ce projet, à deux figures de proue de sa famille artistique. Le metteur en scène et artiste plasticien Romeo Castellucci va, sans aucune ironie, droit au cœur du mythe wagnérien, invitant chaque spectateur et chaque spectatrice à s’en faire sa propre lecture. Quant à l’interprétation musicale du chef d’orchestre Alain Altinoglu, elle donne au drame – concept cher à Wagner – sa pleine dimension.

ALBERICH CHOOSES A GOLDEN RING OVER LOVE.
Op de diepe bodem van de Rijn lonkt magisch goud. Wanneer de Rijndochters die erover waken spottend de avances van de Nibelung Alberich afwijzen, ontfutselt de dwerg hen niet alleen hun schat maar ook zijn geheim: smeed uit het goud een ring en zweer de liefde af, en je verwerft de wereldheerschappij. Alberich twijfelt niet, maar zijn almacht is van korte duur. Ook oppergod Wotan heeft immers zijn zinnen op het goud gezet. Hij wil er zijn schuld mee aflossen bij de reuzen die zijn zo lang gedroomde nieuwe burcht hebben gebouwd. Maar symboliseert dit Walhalla, moeizaam opgetrokken uit verbroken pacten, niet het funeste streven van zijn eigenaar? Is de neergang van zijn macht ook al niet begonnen?

Met de première van Das Rheingold vangt in 1876 een nieuw en beslissend hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de opera aan. Uit een enkel openingsakkoord, 136 maten lang aangehouden, ontwaakt een kosmos: die van Richard Wagners epische tetralogie Der Ring des Nibelungen. Gestoeld op het ideaal van het ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ zou dit werk een esthetische, filosofische en bovenal artistieke revolutie teweegbrengen, die tot op de dag van vandaag blijft doorzinderen.

De Munt gaat de uitdaging aan om, gespreid over twee seizoenen, een nieuwe productie van deze cyclus te realiseren, te beginnen met de ‘vooravond’: Das Rheingold. Daarvoor wendt het zich tot twee boegbeelden van zijn artistieke familie. Regisseur en beeldend kunstenaar Romeo Castellucci gaat, ver van elke ironie, recht naar de kern van Wagners mythe, en nodigt elke toeschouwer uit om er zich een eigen interpretatie van te vormen. En in de muzikale interpretatie van dirigent Alain Altinoglu ontplooit het drama, een concept dat Wagner zo dierbaar was, zich in zijn volle dimensie.
