Paris at the turn of the century. Romantic crooked streets, narrow staircases, cozy inns, bars, revelers, artists, easy decadence - this is Montmartre. Our heroes - the writer, the painter and the composer - live their everyday bohemian lives, sometimes dreaming of world fame or the next day's breakfast. As in all worthwhile operettas, love and passion are the driving force of the story in The Violet of Montmartre. Henri Murger's novel Bohemians was published in Paris in the middle of the 19th century. This work inspired Puccini to write Bohémé, and three decades later Imré Kálmán to write The Violet of Montmartre. After its premiere in Vienna in 1930, like most of Imre Kálmán's operettas, this work also conquered the world.

Párizs a századfordulón. Romantikus görbe utcák, szűk lépcsők, hangulatos kisvendéglők, bárok, mulatók, művészek, könnyed dekadencia – ez a Montmartre. Hőseink – az író, a festő és a zeneszerző – hol a világhírnévről, hol a másnapi reggeliről álmodozva élik mindennapi bohém életüket. Mint minden valamirevaló operettben, A Montmartre-i ibolyában is a szerelem és a szenvedély a történet mozgatórugója. Henri Murger Bohémek című regénye a 19. század közepén jelent meg Párizsban. Ez a mű ihlette Puccinit a Bohémélet, majd három évtizeddel később Kálmán Imrét A Montmartre-i ibolya megírására.  Az 1930-as bécsi bemutatót követően, ahogyan Kálmán Imre operettjeinek többsége, ez a mű is meghódította a világot
