Die Zeit, die ist ein sonderbar Ding« weiß Richard Strauss’ Marschallin im »Rosenkavalier«. Mich würde es nicht wundern, wenn auch der Münchner Schriftsteller Gustav von Aschenbach, der Held von Benjamin Brittens letzter und persönlichster Oper »Der Tod in Venedig« nach der gleichnamigen Erzählung von Thomas Mann, so etwas
singen würde. Aschenbach gerät auf seiner Reise in die Lagunenstadt in einen großen Totentanz, eine Zeitenwende, einen Mahlstrom, der nicht nur ihn, sein Innerstes, sondern auch ganz Europa in den Abgrund reißt. Ein letztes Mal darf es einen Frühling, eine Ahnung von Sommer geben. Dann versinkt alles in Krieg, Tod und Untergang. Mann schreibt seine Erzählung 1911. Drei Jahre später werden die Staaten Europas von einem Kriegssturm ungekannten Ausmaßes hinweggefegt. Er öffnet das Tor zum 20. Jahrhundert. An dessen Beginn steht der Tod. Niemand wird ungeschoren
aus ihm hervorgehen. Deshalb spielt sich diese seltsame Liebesgeschichte, die auch ein Abgesang auf eine Epoche ist, vor dem Panorama der faszinierendsten und zugleich morbidesten Stadt der Welt ab: Venedig.

Time is a strange thing« is known by Richard Strauss' Marschallin in »Rosenkavalier«. It wouldn't surprise me if the Munich writer Gustav von Aschenbach, the hero of Benjamin Britten's last and most personal opera "Death in Venice" based on the story of the same name by Thomas Mann, did something like that
would sing. On his journey to the lagoon city, Aschenbach gets into a great dance of death, a turning point in time, a maelstrom that not only pulls him, his innermost being, but also all of Europe into the abyss. One last time there may be a spring, a hint of summer. Then everything sinks into war, death and destruction. Mann wrote his story in 1911. Three years later, the states of Europe were swept away by a storm of war of unprecedented proportions. It opens the gate to the 20th century. At the beginning there is death. No one will
come out of it unscathed. That is why this strange love story, which is also a farewell to an epoch, takes place against the backdrop of the most fascinating and at the same time most morbid city in the world: Venice.
