Since time immemorial, the Dutchman has been doomed to sail the seas. Only when a period of seven years has elapsed is he allowed to go ashore to assure himself of the unconditional loyalty of a woman and thereby find salvation. Now he is pinning his hopes on Senta, the daughter of the merchant Daland, who is well acquainted with the ballad of The Flying Dutchman and feels drawn to his picture. However, when the Dutchman believes he has been betrayed by Senta and wants to leave her behind, she takes the decisive step to break through the framework of her previous life and thereby redeem the Dutchman.
Richard Wagner has to try his hand at romantic and great historical material three times before he finally finds his way to himself in his fourth opera. His own experience of a stormy sea voyage from Riga to London, on which he truly had to endure mortal fear off the Norwegian coast, prompts Wagner to test the themes that will move him up to "Parsifal" for their stage effectiveness.
In the Graz new production of the “Flying Dutchman” a work by the director Sandra Leupold can be experienced for the first time at the Graz Opera Carlo" was awarded the German Theater Prize "Der Faust".
