The opera Der fliegende Holländer premiered in 1843 under the musical direction of Richard Wagner. The libretto is in the realm of the fantastic: for having invoked the Devil, a Dutch sailor (by some identified as the Romantic Hero) was condemned to wander eternally through the seas, commanding a ghost ship. He is granted, as an escape from the curse, the possibility of being able to come to earth every seven years and to find a woman who will be faithful to him until death. The redeemer will be the daughter of the sailor Daland, Senta, who will break the curse by throwing herself into the sea.

The work presented, for the first time, some constitutive elements of all future Wagnerian production and contains environments and characters impregnated with realism. Daland, a striking example, will be sung by the British Peter Rose. Der fliegende Holländer arrived in São Carlos on March 4, 1893 and has already had notable Dutch interpreters here. Thomas Gazheli, who has recorded Wagnerian triumphs around the world, continues an illustrious gallery. The new production is signed by Max Hoehn, a young director who was part of Graham Vick's artistic team in the production of Alceste in São Carlos, in 2019, and who will transport the epic character of Wagner's music to a sustainable scenic design, in line with the challenges of our time.

A ópera Der fliegende Holländer estreou em 1843 sob a direção musical de Richard Wagner. O libreto é do domínio do fantástico: por ter invocado o Demónio, um marinheiro holandês (por alguns identificado como o Herói Romântico) foi condenado a errar eternamente pelos mares, comandando um navio-fantasma. É-lhe concedida, como escape à maldição, a possibilidade de poder vir a terra de sete em sete anos e de encontrar uma mulher que lhe seja fiel até à morte. A redentora será a filha do marinheiro Daland, Senta, que quebrará a maldição lançando-se ao mar.

A obra apresentou, pela primeira vez, alguns elementos constitutivos de toda a futura produção wagneriana e contém ambientes e personagens impregnados de realismo. Daland, exemplo marcante, vai ser cantado pelo britânico Peter Rose. Der fliegende Holländer chegou ao São Carlos a 4 de março de 1893 e já aqui teve notáveis intérpretes do Holandês. Thomas Gazheli, que tem averbado triunfos wagnerianos em todo o mundo, vem continuar uma ilustre galeria. A nova produção é assinada por Max Hoehn, jovem encenador que integrou a equipa artística de Graham Vick na produção de Alceste em São Carlos, em 2019, e que transportará o caráter épico da música de Wagner para uma conceção cénica sustentável, em linha com os desafios do nosso tempo.
