Der Holländer ist ein Verfluchter, ein Getriebener, ein Außenseiter. Die Figur dieses Heimatlosen lernte Richard Wagner bei Heinrich Heine kennen, der den romantischen Stoff jedoch mit der ihm typischen Ironie erzählte. Wagner hingegen interessierte sich nicht für Heines Rahmenhandlung, die den Holländer-Stoff in Distanz rückte. Wagner versenkte sich in die Geschichte des mysteriösen Seefahrers und schuf seine erste Oper über die Suche des Mannes nach der ihn erlösenden Frau. Holländer, der rastlose Wanderer zwischen Leben und Tod, trifft auf eine Frau – Senta –, die ebenfalls fremd und heimatlos scheint und sich nach einer männlichen Figur sehnt, die sie aus ihren eigenen Fantasien geboren hat: den Holländer. Es ist eine Welt der Traumbilder und des Fantastischen, der Obsessionen und der Projektionen – eine Welt, die längst den Bezug zur Wirklichkeit verloren hat. Dies trifft vor allem den Jäger Erik, der als der vielleicht einzig wahre und real Liebende erscheint. Doch er erreicht die anderen, die sich in ihren Träumen auflösen, nicht mehr. Wagners Oper, 1841 entstanden und 1843 in Dresden uraufgeführt, ist nach dem vorangehenden RIENZI, der stilistisch der Grand Opéra folgte, eine Hinwendung zur Tradition der deutschen romantischen Oper von Weber oder Marschner. Trotz dieser Orientierung am Zeitgeist weist das Werk auf Wagners weitere Entwicklung als Musikdramatiker voraus. Und erstmals steht im Zentrum Wagners Lebensthema der Erlösung durch Liebe im Tod.

Der Regisseur und Choreograf Christian Spuck, der an der Deutschen Oper Berlin bereits 2014 mit seiner Inszenierung von Hector Berlioz’ FAUSTS VERDAMMNIS begeisterte, arbeitete bereits zum zweiten Mal an der Deutschen Oper Berlin, wiederum im Team mit Generalmusikdirektor Donald Runnicles.

The Dutchman is a cursed man, a driven man, an outsider. Richard Wagner got to know the character of this homeless person from Heinrich Heine, who, however, told the romantic story with his typical irony. Wagner, on the other hand, was not interested in Heine's background story, which distanced itself from the Dutch material. Wagner immersed himself in the story of the mysterious seafarer and created his first opera about the man's search for the woman who would redeem him. Holländer, the restless wanderer between life and death, meets a woman - Senta - who also seems alien and homeless and longs for a male character that she has born from her own fantasies: the Dutchman. It is a world of dream images and the fantastic, of obsessions and projections - a world which has long since lost touch with reality. This particularly affects the hunter Erik, who appears as perhaps the only true and real lover. But he no longer reaches the others, who dissolve in their dreams. Wagner's opera, written in 1841 and first performed in Dresden in 1843, is, after the preceding RIENZI, which stylistically followed the Grand Opéra, a turning to the tradition of German romantic opera by Weber or Marschner. Despite this orientation to the zeitgeist, the work points to Wagner's further development as a music dramatist. And for the first time, Wagner's life theme of redemption through love in death is at the center. The director and choreographer Christian Spuck, who already thrilled at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2014 with his production of Hector Berlioz' THE DAMNATION OF FAUS, has worked at the Deutsche Oper Berlin for the second time, again in a team with General Music Director Donald Runnicles.
