Today, this work is about to meet the audience at the Guangzhou Grand Theater on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of its opening. The version staged at the Guangzhou Opera House this time was jointly produced by the Shanghai Opera House and the Erfurt Theater in Germany. Erfurt Theater in Germany and Shanghai Grand Theater. The work premiered in Dresden on January 2, 1843. The story is based on a literary work written by Heinrich Heine in 1833. In November 1841, Wagner completed the composition and wrote the following sentence on the last page of the score: " In the night of poverty, through the road of thorns to the world of light. "
 
According to legend, once upon a time, there was a Dutch navigator who braved a huge storm to circumvent the Cape of Good Hope, and vowed that he must complete his feat, even if he sailed for a lifetime, he would not be afraid. The devil heard his oath, and condemned him, and punished him to be adrift at sea until the end of the world; and he shall never be free, unless he finds a woman who will love him faithfully till his death.
