The Free Gunner is often referred to as the first German national opera. At the same time, it is one of the peaks of the romantic opera of the 19th century. Continuing the tradition of Mozart's singspiel (primarily The Magic Flute), Weber opened the way to the future for German music.

Expressive, catchy melodies and a captivating plot instantly brought "Free Gunner" popularity. From the first performances, held in June 1821 in Berlin under the direction of the author, the opera was an unprecedented success. The famous German writer Ernest Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann stated: “With this new great work, the composer erected a monument to himself that will create an era in the history of German opera…”. That was absolutely true - with the advent of The Free Gunner in Germany, the dominance of Italian opera ended and a whole galaxy of national authors appeared, the most famous of which soon became Wagner.

Says the director of the opera Alexander Titel :

“The production was conceived even before that dramatic period that all of humanity is still going through - the COVID-19 pandemic. When the artist and conductor and I talked about the fact that a person is moving more and more into the virtual world, and sometimes confuses the virtual world with the real one, we could not even imagine that we would soon leave for many months in this same virtual world. The heroes of our performance are real people, our contemporaries who are developing computer games. They come up with the game "Free shooter". It seems to us that the opera can talk about how the online and offline worlds collide, whether they are interchangeable.”

«Вольного стрелка» часто называют первой немецкой национальной оперой. Одновременно это одна из вершин романтической оперы XIX века. Продолжая традиции моцартовских зингшпилей (в первую очередь «Волшебной флейты»), Вебер открыл немецкой музыке путь в будущее.

Выразительные, запоминающиеся мелодии и увлекательный сюжет мгновенно принесли «Вольному стрелку» популярность. С первых спектаклей, состоявшихся в июне 1821 года в Берлине под управлением автора, опера шла с невиданным успехом. Знаменитый немецкий писатель Эрнест Теодор Амадей Гофман утверждал: «Этим новым большим произведением композитор воздвиг себе памятник, который создаст эпоху в истории немецкой оперы…». То было абсолютной правдой – с появлением «Вольного стрелка» в Германии закончилось господство итальянской оперы и появилась целая плеяда национальных авторов, самым известным из которых вскоре стал Вагнер.

Говорит режиссер-постановщик оперы Александр Титель:

«Постановка была задумана еще до того драматического периода, который все еще переживает все человечество, – пандемии COVID-19. Когда мы с художником и дирижером рассуждали о том, что человек все больше и больше переходит в виртуальный мир, а иногда путает мир виртуальный и реальный, мы и представить себе не могли, что вскоре на много месяцев уйдем в этот самый виртуальный мир. Герои нашего спектакля – реальные люди, наши современники, которые занимаются разработкой компьютерных игр. Они придумывают игру «Вольный стрелок». Нам кажется, что опера может поговорить о том, как сталкиваются online и offline миры, взаимозаменяемы ли они».
