Der Freischütz" by Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) had an enormous impact when it premiered in 1821. The German composer's dedicated effort to break with the traditions of Italian opera was celebrated as the birth of German Romantic opera. The unprecedented importance given to the orchestra and the dramatic subtlety of Max's fantastic story unfolding got both Beethoven and Wagner excited. For their French debuts, stage directors Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito are probing the ideological background of this story, which centers on the diabolic pact which hunter Max makes with an evil, supernatural force. This wins him not just the victory at a shooting contest, but also the hand of young Agathe, with whom he is hopelessly in love. Patrick Lange is making his debut at the OnR as conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Mulhouse.
