Paris 1482. Quasimodo, the deaf and crippled hunchback of Notre-Dame, is elected Pope of Fools. Among the dancers is the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, whom not only the jesters but also the priest Claude Frollo are attracted to. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap Esmeralda, but the plan fails: Quasimodo is caught by the captain Phoebus. Esmeralda takes pity on him and begs for mercy - winning the affection of the hunchbacked ringer. She falls in love with the captain, who returns her love. But the jealous priest Claude Frollo has observed everything and is plotting revenge...


The 1831 novel "Notre-Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo is undoubtedly one of the classics of world literature. In addition to numerous film adaptations and plays, there are also various ballet adaptations of the material. Ballet director Mark McClain, who delighted the Coburg audience with narrative ballets such as "Peer Gynt" and "Der Feuervogel", this story about the entanglements of power, passion and jealousy is adapted to the touching and intoxicating sounds of the music of Bizet and Rachmaninoff in his own poetic Bring movement language to the stage.

Paris 1482. Quasimodo, der taube und verkrüppelte Glöckner von Notre-Dame, wird zum Narrenpapst gewählt. Unter den Tanzenden ist auch die schöne Zigeunerin Esmeralda, von der nicht nur die Narren, sondern auch der Priester Claude Frollo angetan ist. Er befiehlt Quasimodo, Esmeralda zu entführen, doch der Plan misslingt: Quasimodo wird von dem Hauptmann Phöbus gefasst. Esmeralda hat Mitleid mit ihm und bittet um Gnade – und gewinnt so die Zuneigung des buckligen Glöckners. Sie verliebt sich in den Hauptmann, der ihre Liebe erwidert. Doch der eifersüchtige Priester Claude Frollo hat alles beobachtet und sinnt auf Rache …


Der 1831 erschienene Roman „Notre-Dame de Paris“ von Victor Hugo zählt zweifellos zu den Klassikern der Weltliteratur. Neben zahlreichen Verfilmungen und Theaterstücken gibt es auch diverse Ballettadaptionen des Stoffs. Ballettdirektor Mark McClain, der mit Handlungsballetten wie „Peer Gynt“ und „Der Feuervogel“ das Coburger Publikum begeisterte, wird diese Geschichte um die Verstrickungen von Macht, Leidenschaft und Eifersucht passend zu den berührenden und rauschhaften Klängen der Musik Bizets und Rachmaninows in seiner eigenen poetischen Bewegungssprache auf die Bühne bringen.
