A tenor who feels compelled by the ridicule of his colleagues to justify why he is a virtuoso despite limited vocal material; a music enemy who singingly articulates his aversion to music; a singing teacher who turns out to be a charlatan and turns a poor man into a star tenor by the laying on of hands - Richard Genées and Jacques Offenbach's one-act operetta have some amusing surprises in store for the audience.
Both are among the personalities who had the greatest influence on the development of operetta in the second half of the 19th century. Her small, often satirical one-act plays are real gems to this day thanks to their melodic ideas and musical wit.
