Schoolmaster Baculus and his bride Gretchen have invited to the wedding party. Suddenly, the mood is clouded by the news that the teacher will be fired with immediate effect for poaching in the forests of Count von Eberbach. Baculus had indeed followed Gretchen's advice and gone hunting to enrich the feast. And he was caught in the act. Gretchen now wants to ask the Count for mercy herself, but the jealous bridegroom doesn't want to let her go, as the master of the village is considered a womanizer. Two students appear as saviors, one of whom agrees to go to the castle in girl's clothes and play the role of the bride there. Baculus and Gretchen are both happy and amused about this solution.

The light opera by Albert Lortzing (1801-1851), which comes up with speed, wit and a great wealth of melodies, was first performed in Leipzig in 1842. Dismissed a few years later as conductor at the Theater an der Wien, Lortzing worked briefly as an actor in Gera in 1850 before returning to his native city of Berlin. In addition to Zar und Zimmermann and Der Waffenschmied , Der Wildschütz is one of Lortzing's best-known works.
