At the Mörbisch Lake Festival this year, the "Gypsy Baron" will be performed, which, simply because of its content, fits perfectly into the ambience of the surrounding Burgenland landscape. "The Gypsy Baron" is one of Johann Strauss' greatest stage works. He combines the lively waltz melodies of the golden Viennese operetta era with the fiery Csárdás sounds of Hungarian folk music. Johann Strauss would have liked to have seen his work, which was conceived as a "comic opera", on an opera stage. It was only years after his death that "Der Zigeunbaron" was performed in 1910 in the Dresden Semperoper and in the Vienna State Opera, which was then called the "Hofoperntheater".
The production in Mörbisch will be performed for the first time by the director of the Tiroler Landestheater, Kammersängerin Brigitte Fassbaender, who after an extraordinary career as a mezzo-soprano has also enjoyed an excellent reputation as a director for many years. The performance's soloists include tenor Lucian Krasznec (Gypsy Baron Sándor Barinkay) and soprano Evelin Novak (Saffi). Director Harald Serafin embodies the role of the strict royal commissioner Conte Carnero and his son Daniel Serafin is back in Mörbisch in the role of Count Homonay. With Wolfgang Bankl as Kálmán Zsupán, a highly valued and long-standing ensemble singer of the Vienna State Opera makes a guest appearance on the open-air stage.
