Ópera de un acto, compuesta por Alexander von Zemlinsky, que se inspira en el relato corto The birthday of the infanta (El cumpleaños de la infanta), de Oscar Wilde. Se trata de la obra más emblemática del autor austriaco.

 

Un sultán envía un enano como regalo a la infanta Doña Clara en su decimoctavo cumpleaños. El enano no es consciente de su aspecto físico y se encapricha de la infanta. Le canta una canción de amor y se imagina que es su valiente caballero. Ella juega con él y le regala una rosa blanca. Al quedarse solo, ve su propio reflejo por primera vez ante un espejo. Muy agitado, intenta obtener un beso de la infanta, pero ella lo rechaza y lo llama monstruo. Con el corazón destrozado, muere aferrado a la rosa blanca mientras la Infanta se reincorpora a la fiesta.

A sultan sends a dwarf as a gift to the Infanta Doña Clara on her eighteenth birthday. The dwarf is unaware of his physical appearance and becomes infatuated with the infanta. He sings her a love song and imagines that he is her brave knight. She plays with him and gives him a white rose. Left alone, he sees his own reflection for the first time in a mirror. Very agitated, he tries to obtain a kiss from the Infanta, but she rejects him, calling him a monster. Heartbroken, he dies clinging to the white rose as the Infanta rejoins the party.
