In a nutshell and condensed, but also deeply emotional, Henry Purcell tells of the blossoming and dying of love between two people: Dido, the powerful ruler of Carthage, falls in love with Aeneas, who is shipwrecked on Carthage's coast after the destruction of Troy. He, too, falls in love with Dido. But Dido's happiness is a thorn in the side of a sorceress and she drives the lovers apart with all her might. Aeneas is called to duty and has to leave Dido. This goes upright in suicide: «Remember me, but ah! forget my fate», are her last words. 

The tragic love story of the Carthaginian queen Dido and the Trojan prince Aeneas is one of the most frequently set pieces in operatic history. Pietro Metastasio's libretto «Didone abbandonata» was set to music more than 40 times. Composers such as Francesco Cavalli, Georg Friedrich Handel, Saverio Mercadante and Hector Berlioz have taken on the episode from Virgil's "Aeneid", which is one of the founding myths of ancient Rome. The most popular is certainly Henry Purcell's opera "Dido and Aeneas", which was written in 1689 to a libretto by Nahum Tate. 

Opened up from multiple perspectives, the opera with soloists and choir is both intimate and baroque-splendid at the same time. The production, directed by the Austrian director Magdalena Fuchsberger, can only be seen at the Lucerne Theater for a short time. In-house scenographer Valentin Köhler builds DAS HAUS in the house for this and for the «Orestie», which is shown as another grand myth in the play, and thus ensures a special spatial experience.
