Willy, Kurt und Hans sind vom einen auf den nächsten Moment pleite. Die Dienerschaft ist über alle Berge, und überall in der Villa klebt der Kuckuck. Einzig das Auto ist ihnen geblieben, und das verkaufen sie jetzt, um sich eine neue Existenz als Tankstellenbetreiber aufzubauen, irgendwo im Nirgendwo, kurz hinter Drögennindorf. Es dauert nicht lang, da verlieben sich die drei in eine ihrer besten Kundinnen, die junge und reiche Lilian Coßmann. Und die findet die drei auch sehr anziehend. Schließlich fällt ihre Wahl auf Willy, aber natürlich geht es alles nicht ganz so glatt, wie Lilian sich das vorstellt. Denn als Willy entdeckt, wer eigentlich hinter seinem Karrieresprung steckt, will er auf der Stelle kündigen …
Was macht eine gute Operette aus? Eine romantische (Liebes-) Geschichte, jede Menge Pleiten, Pech und Pannen, wunderschöne Melodien, die einem noch lange im Ohr bleiben, und der Traum, dass – wenigstens auf der Bühne – am Ende alles gut wird. So wurde der berühmte Film aus dem Jahr 1930 zum Hit in einem Land, das von einer Wirtschaftskrise geschüttelt wurde und am Rande des Abgrunds stand. Die Nazis verboten den Film, und viele der Beteiligten flohen ins Exil – jener Traum aber hat bis heute nichts von seinem Reiz verloren.

Willy, Kurt and Hans are broke from one moment to the next. The servants are all over the mountains, and the cuckoo sticks everywhere in the villa. The only thing they have left is the car, and they are now selling it in order to start a new life as a petrol station operator somewhere in the middle of nowhere, just outside Drögennindorf. It doesn't take long for the three of them to fall in love with one of their best customers, the young and rich Lilian Cossmann. And she also finds the three very attractive. In the end, she chooses Willy, but of course things don't go quite as smoothly as Lilian imagines. Because when Willy discovers who is actually behind his career leap, he wants to quit on the spot...
What makes a good operetta? A romantic (love) story, lots of bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps, beautiful melodies that stay in your head for a long time, and the dream that – at least on stage – everything will be fine in the end. This is how the famous 1930 film became a hit in a country shaken by an economic crisis and on the brink of collapse. The Nazis banned the film and many of those involved fled into exile – but that dream has lost none of its appeal to this day.
