Konstanze, Blonde and Pedrillo are captured and sold as slaves to Bassa Selim. Belmonte, Constance's fiancé, wants to free the three. But the kidnapping fails. While the overseer Osmin hopes for retribution, Bassa Selim gives the kidnapped her life.
In the summer of 1781 Mozart freed himself from the "archbishop's fetters" in Salzburg. He wants to gain a foothold in Vienna and take his life into his own hands. The efforts of Emperor Joseph II to counter the dominance of Italian and French operas with something German-speaking play a positive role in Mozart's cards. He is commissioned to compose a Singspiel based on Christoph Friedrich Bretzner's Belmont und Constanze, or Die Entführung aus dem Serail .

The premiere is a success. The generic name, however, is already misleading contemporaries, slumbering under the guise of a supposedly cheerful oriental fairy tale with an enlightening message, a work that scrutinizes familiar role models. That asks if unconditional love is possible. When trust turns into alienation. How steadfast the concept of fidelity is. Which means "to be humanly kind". Musically as well as dramaturgically, Mozart kindles a vortex of otherness, freedom and self-determination, which leaves behind a bit of the greatest seriousness of a conventional type comedy.
