Even the contemporaries of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were aware that THE ENTFUTURE FROM THE SERAIL had turned out to be far more important than the generic term “singspiel” would suggest. It was not only the client, Emperor Joseph II, who was irritated by the “enormous number of notes” at the Vienna premiere in 1784, but also Goethe felt compelled to question his own efforts to produce German-language Singspiels in view of the resounding success of Mozart’s piece. The ENTFUHRUNG was soon regarded as the first German national opera: as the first successful attempt to counteract the theatrical affective language of Italian opera with an equivalent work in German. This applies above all to the emotional depth of the characters: in the extreme situation of the stranger, which isolates the couple Belmonte and Konstanze from all external social influences, Mozart succeeds in expressing the fundamental question of interpersonal relationships in an unconditional musical way: Do I really love the other so much that I want to spend my life with him? And do I know myself well enough to make such a commitment with a clear conscience?

The ENTFUHRUNG has repeatedly inspired important theater makers to engage with it - all the more so since its structure, with the alternation of spoken dialogues and musical numbers, is more open to textual adaptations than through-composed operas. In June 2016, one of the most exciting, uncompromising directors on the European theater scene dared to make his music theater debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with ENTFAHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL: The Argentinian Rodrigo García has enjoyed great international success with plays such as “Gólgota Picnic”.
