The Bat represents a difficult test of a theatrical ensemble not only in terms of interpretation, but also in terms of acting. A well-managed production is an acting concert crowned with beautiful melodies. After a world premiere in 1874, a critic writing for the Viennese newspaper Morgenpost wrote: . Everything here chirps, makes music, sings and trilks like in the middle of spring. "
