Hardly any other operetta holds up a mirror to society in a more indiscreet and at the same time humorous way. Laws and marriages are broken with a light hand, compulsive amusement and the power of money fizzle out in the nothingness of boozy double standards. Here they roll until their soles glow, overtake their own values ​​in rapid polka steps and indulge in the blissful intoxication of melancholy. If an operetta can dance on the edge of the volcano, then the uncrowned Viennese queen of this genre: the »Fledermaus« by Johann Strauss and his lyricists Carl Haffner and Richard Genée.

The satirist Wolfgang Körner summed up the plot in his »one and only« operetta guide: »Everyone makes out with everyone else and everyone ends up in jail – but not because of that!« And that pretty much says it all. What escalates on a lavish night at the ball with the chronically bored Prince Alexander Orlofsky has to be painfully unraveled in the rather private atmosphere of the local prison, and in the end one is richer (also in the audience) with a lot of rousing music, situation comedy and some wisdom: where champagne in Streams flow, no throat and no eye remain dry.
