A wealthy small town boy who should go to jail but would rather party with pretty ballerinas. His wife, who would love to be virtuous, but melts away at every high note from a tenor. An excuse-less maid who dreams of a great career as an acting diva. These are the ingredients of Johann Strauss' " Die Fledermaus ".

Within a tricky plot of intrigue, in which everyone pretends to be something they are not, the boring, demure middle-class everyday life and the dream of a morally permissive theater world are played off against each other with relish. The opportunity for this is provided by the feast of a Russian prince, which is heralded as a great promise but can only unfold for a brief champagne-drunk moment before the inevitable hangover.
