Franz Schreker's opera “The Drawn” is one of the scandal-ridden works of the early 20th century. It revolves around art visions, sensual intoxication, erotic crossing of boundaries, perversion and violence. How will director Barrie Kosky implement these aspects? Franz Schreker’s large-scale opera, Die Gezeichneten (The Branded), is one of the early 20th century’s most scandalous works. It revolves around artistic visions, erotic transgression, perversion and violence. The deformed nobleman Alviano Salvago has realised his dream of artistic beauty on an island outside the city of Genoa and created an Elysium of untrammelled revelry, although he never enters it himself. A clique of aristocratic Genoese gentlemen uses the island to celebrate secret orgies in the catacombs and to violate young girls from the bourgeoisie whom they have abducted. Alviano intends to open his artistic Elysium to the public. The scandalous goings-on are exposed. Following its première in 1918, Die Gezeichneten became one of the most-performed operas in the repertoire – until the National Socialists’ artistic policies brought the work and life of the Jewish artist Schreker to an abrupt end. The composer’s operas began to reappear increasingly on programmes in the 1980s, and Die Gezeichneten is currently enjoying a second Renaissance; prominent directors have tackled the influential work in several major theatres. The subject matter is an amalgamation of the most heterogeneous influences, ranging from Nietzsche to Sigmund Freud’s interpretation of dreams. Traces of Wagner, Debussy, Mahler and early Schönberg can be heard in the enchanting, iridescently colourful music.

The conductor Vladimir Jurowski will be giving his début at Zurich Opera House with this production, and the acclaimed director Barrie Kosky will be presenting his interpretation of this extraordinary score. Catherine Naglestad can be heard in the principle female role of Carlotta, an artist and painter of souls who has a weak heart. The tenor John Daszak, an experienced performer of Schreker, will be performing the role of the misshapen Alviano Salvago.

The misshapen nobleman Alviano Salvago has realized his dream of artistic beauty on an island off the city of Genoa and created an elysium of boundless merrymaking, which he himself never sets foot on. A clique of men from Genoese aristocracy secretly uses the island to celebrate orgies in the catacombs and to desecrate kidnapped young bourgeois daughters. Alviano wants to open his art Elysium to the public. The scandalous goings-on are revealed. The marked oneswas first performed in 1918 and subsequently became one of the most frequently performed operas, until National Socialist art policy brought the work of the Jewish artist Schreker and his life to an abrupt end. In the 1980s, his operas began to appear more frequently in the repertoire, and Die Gezeichten is currently experiencing a kind of second renaissance: Prominent directors have taken on the influential work on several major stages. The material amalgamates the most heterogeneous influences from Nietzsche to Sigmund Freud's dream thinking. Wagner, Debussy, Mahler and the early Schönberg left their mark on the beguilingly colorful music.

Conductor Vladimir Jurowski makes his Zurich Opera debut in this production and acclaimed director Barrie Kosky presents his reading of this extraordinary score. Catherine Naglestad can be seen in the female lead of the heart-weak, soul-painting artist Carlotta. The Schreker-experienced tenor John Daszak is the misshapen Alviano Salvago.
