Um die klammen Kassen des in finanzielle Schieflage geratenen Operetten-Staats Pontevedro zu sanieren, veranstaltet der pontevedrinische Gesandte Baron Zeta in Paris ein rauschendes Fest mit dem Hintergedanken, auf diesem Weg die letzten finanziellen Privatreserven für das Vaterland zu retten. Denn der drohende Staatsbankrott scheint nur noch durch eine Heirat der millionenschweren pontevedrinischen Witwe Hanna Glawari mit einem Landsmann abwendbar. Mit der Uraufführung von Franz Lehárs »Die lustige Witwe« am 30. Dezember 1905 erlebte die Ära der »silbernen Operette« ihren Glanz- und Höhepunkt. Noch heute zählt das Werk zu den beliebtesten Stücken des Genres.

In order to rehabilitate the cash-strapped coffers of the operetta state of Pontevedro, which has gotten into financial difficulties, the Pontevedrin envoy Baron Zeta organizes a lavish party in Paris with the ulterior motive of saving the last private financial reserves for the fatherland. Because the impending state bankruptcy seems to be averted only by marrying the millionaire Pontevedrin widow Hanna Glawari to a compatriot. With the premiere of Franz Lehár's »The Merry Widow« on December 30, 1905, the era of the »silver operetta« reached its zenith. The work is still one of the most popular pieces of the genre today.
