“The Merry Widow” is one of Franz Lehár's best-known operettas and is considered a prime example of the second great operetta era after 1900. The starting point for this was the comedy drama “L'Attaché d'ambassade” by Henri Meilhac, which premiered in Paris in 1861. Leo Stein came up with the brilliant idea of ​​turning the material into an operetta. Together with Victor Léon, he wrote the libretto in which the impoverished German Grand Duchy was quickly transformed into the more exotic little Balkan state of Pontevedro. The piece outlines the mentality and political map of Europe at the end of the 19th century in an easy and fascinating way. With numbers such as Danilo and Hanna's duet "Lips Silent" or Hanna's nostalgic Vilja song through to the rousing ball scenes, the operetta, which was first performed at the Theater an der Wien in 1905, and Lehár's music continue to enchant audiences worldwide today.

Der pontevedrinische Gesandte hat Angst, dass sie nun einen Pariser heiraten und somit das ganze Geld dem Heimatland Pontevedro abhandenkommen könnte. Deshalb soll Hanna auf einem Ball mit dem Grafen Danilo verkuppelt werden, der sich jedoch lieber mit Grisetten im Tanzlokal Maxim amüsiert.
