He embodies the stormy lover, the gallant beguiler or the tragic hero: the tenor often sets the tone in the opera, who longs and loves, fears or triumphs in his arias. It is not for nothing that many tenor arias are among the musical highlights of an opera, just think of the dramatic "E lucevan le stelle" from the opera Tosca or the world-famous "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. At least since Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras came together to form the "Three Tenors" in the 1990s, the special tonal character of this voice range has delighted an audience of millions.
