Something's happening in Cyprus! Pygmalion, the best sculptor of antiquity, has created a statue of perfect female beauty: the beautiful Galathée, which he always keeps hidden from prying eyes so that he can enjoy her all to himself. Even his faithful servant Ganymede is only allowed to see them to dust them off. When the rich art patron Mydas secretly takes a look at the work of art and is determined to buy the statue, the jealous Pygmalion, who is in love with the marble lady, chases him out of the studio. And then the unimaginable happens: the statue comes to life! Unfortunately, she doesn't show her best side and turns out to be a man-mad woman full of vanity and coquetry - to the disappointment of the sculptor, who believes that there must also be a good soul in a perfect body...

The piquant and ludicrous work about the marble beauty with its melodic richness is one of Suppé's best creations - without it, "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw and "One Touch of Venus" by Kurt Weill would not have been possible.

In Zypern ist was los! Pygmalion, der beste Bildhauer des Altertums, hat eine Statue vollendeter weiblicher Schönheit geschaffen: Die schöne Galathée, die er stets vor fremden Augen verborgen hält, um sie ganz allein genießen zu können. Selbst sein treuer Diener Ganymed darf sie nur sehen, um sie abzustauben. Als der reiche Kunstmäzen Mydas heimlich einen Blick auf das Kunstwerk wirft und entschlossen ist, die Statue zu erwerben, jagt ihn der eifersüchtige und in die marmorne Dame verliebte Pygmalion aus dem Atelier. Und dann passiert das Unvorstellbare: Die Statue erwacht zum Leben! Nur leider zeigt sie sich nicht gerade von der besten Seite und entpuppt sich als mannstolles Weib voller Eitelkeit und Koketterie – zur Enttäuschung des Bildhauers, glaubt er doch, dass in einem vollendeten Körper auch eine gute Seele stecken müsse...

Das pikante und irrwitzige Werk um die marmorne Schönheit mit seinem melodischen Reichtum gehört zu den besten Schöpfungen Suppés – ohne diese wären „Pygmalion“ von George Bernard Shaw und „One Touch of Venus“ von Kurt Weill nicht vorzustellen gewesen.
