Eines Tages, im Sommer 1916, machte mich Siegfried Trebitsch auf das Schauspiel »Das Trugbild« aufmerksam, das Georges Rodenbach nach seinem berühmten Roman »Bruges-la-Morte« gedichtet und Trebitsch für die deutsche Bühne bearbeitet hatte. Ich las das Stück und entwarf noch an demselben Abend das Szenarium einer Oper. Bei diesem, meinem Szenarium ist es natürlich in der Folge nicht geblieben, wohl aber an meinem Interesse für den Stoff. Die eigentümliche Brügge-Stimmung, der schwermütige Grundton, die beiden Hauptgestalten mit ihren fesselnden seelischen Konflikten, der Kampf der erotischen Macht der lebenden Frau gegen die nachwirkende seelische Macht der Toten, die tiefere Grundidee des Kampfes zwischen Leben und Tod überhaupt, insbesondere der schöne Gedanke notwendiger Eindämmung der Trauer um teure Tote durch die Rechte des Lebens, dabei überall eine Fülle musikalischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten, all das zog mich an. Und dies erst recht, als die letzte Umgestaltung des Stoffes durch Paul Schott alles Geschehen nur Ausfluss einer Vision des aus dem seelischen Gleichgewicht gebrachten Helden werden ließ, eine poetische Ausdeutung, zu der durch Rodenbach, den Dichter, der Anstoß gegeben war, indem er schon die tote Frau den erregten Sinnen des trauernden Gatten erscheinen lässt. Die traumhafte fantastische Sphäre, in die der Stoff damit gerückt war, schien dessen eminente Musikfähigkeit zu vollenden. Von der Musik möchte ich in geziemender Zurückhaltung nur so viel sagen dürfen, dass ich gerade des traumhaft-fantastischen Charakters der Handlung wegen das Streben auf äußerste dramatische Knappheit richtete. Und noch mehr als zuvor war ich bei aller Wahrung der dramatischen Funktionen eines im Dienste von Stimmung, Schilderung und psychologisch-dramatischer Charakteristik farbig und thematisch geführten Orchesters auf Hervortreten des singenden Menschen, auf Gefühl und Affekt widerspiegelnde dramatische Gesangsmelodie bedacht. Dies alles unbeschadet moderner Diktion, in der ich höre und fühle.

One day, in the summer of 1916, Siegfried Trebitsch drew my attention to the play Das Trugbild, which Georges Rodenbach had composed based on his famous novel Bruges-la-Morte and which Trebitsch had adapted for the German stage. I read the play and designed the scenario for an opera that same evening. Of course, it didn't stay with this, my scenario, but with my interest in the material. The peculiar Bruges mood, the melancholy undertone, the two main characters with their gripping mental conflicts, the struggle of the erotic power of the living woman against the lingering mental power of the dead, the deeper basic idea of ​​the struggle between life and death in general, especially the beautiful thought necessary containment of mourning for expensive deaths through the rights of life, a wealth of musical design possibilities everywhere, all of which attracted me. And all the more so when the last transformation of the material by Paul Schott made everything that happened only the result of a vision of the hero who had been thrown out of mental balance, a poetic interpretation to which Rodenbach, the poet, had given the impetus, in that he had already makes the dead woman appear to the excited senses of the grieving husband. The dreamy, fantastic sphere into which the material had thus moved seemed to complete its eminent musical ability. As for the music, I would like to be able to say only so much, with due restraint, that precisely because of the dreamlike-fantastic character of the plot, I strived for extreme dramatic brevity. And even more than before, while preserving the dramatic functions of a colorful and thematic orchestra in the service of mood, description and psychological-dramatic characteristics, I was careful to ensure that the singing person came to the fore, and that the dramatic singing melody reflected feeling and affect. All of this without prejudice to the modern diction in which I hear and feel.
