Der junge Prinz Tamino wird von einer gefährlichen Schlange verfolgt. Im letzten Moment retten drei rätselhafte Damen den Ohnmächtigen und töten die Schlange. Als Tamino wieder zu sich kommt, trifft er auf Papageno. Die drei Damen übergeben Tamino ein Bildnis von Pamina, der Tochter der Königin der Nacht. Der Prinz verliebt sich in das Bild und verspricht der Königin, Pamina aus den Händen Sarastros, der sie geraubt hat, zu befreien. Er macht sich gemeinsam mit Papageno auf die Reise: Zur Unterstützung erhalten Tamino eine Zauberflöte und Papageno ein Glockenspiel.

Papageno, der von Tamino vorausgeschickt wurde, trifft auf Pamina, die vom Sklaven Monostatos bedrängt wird. Papageno schlägt Monostatos in die Flucht und gewinnt Pamina für Tamino. Als sie sich davonmachen wollen, werden sie von Sarastro und seinem Gefolge überrascht.

Im zweiten Teil der Oper erkennt Tamino die Güte Sarastros. Um aber ein vollwertiges Mitglied seiner Priesterschaft zu werden, muss er – zusammen mit Papageno – mehrere schwere Prüfungen bestehen. Tamino gelingt es, alle Proben vorbildlich zu meistern und darf zum Lohn, gemeinsam mit Pamina, an die Stelle Sarastros treten. Papageno, der nicht so erfolgreich war, wird dennoch mit einer zu ihm passenden Partnerin – Papagena – beglückt.

Young Prince Tamino is being pursued by a dangerous snake. At the last moment, three mysterious ladies save the unconscious man and kill the snake. When Tamino regains consciousness, he meets Papageno. The three ladies give Tamino a portrait of Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. The prince falls in love with the picture and promises the queen to free Pamina from the hands of Sarastro, who stole her. He embarks on the journey with Papageno: Tamino receives a magic flute and Papageno a glockenspiel to support him.

Papageno, sent ahead by Tamino, meets Pamina, who is being harassed by the slave Monostatos. Papageno puts Monostatos to flight and wins over Pamina for Tamino. When they want to run away, they are surprised by Sarastro and his entourage.

In the second part of the opera, Tamino recognizes Sarastro's kindness. But in order to become a full member of his priesthood, he - along with Papageno - must pass several difficult tests. Tamino succeeds in mastering all the tests in an exemplary manner and, as a reward, is allowed to take Sarastro's place together with Pamina. Papageno, who was not so successful, is nevertheless blessed with a partner who suits him – Papagena.
