Sie verbindet praktische Lebensweisheit mit hoher Philosophie und die Leichtigkeit des Seins mit den Existenzkrisen der menschlichen Seele. Ihre Beliebtheit verdankt sie vor allem ihrem märchenhaften, volkstheaternahen und gleichzeitig tiefgehenden Inhalt, den spektakulären Bühnenverwandlungen und natürlich der herrlichen Musik Mozarts, aber auch der liebevollen, zutiefst menschlichen Zeichnung der Figuren: Da ist Tamino, ein verträumter Prinz, auf der Flucht vor einem Ungeheuer. Drei Damen retten ihm das Leben. Mehr noch, sie zeigen ihm das Bildnis Paminas – Tochter der sternflammenden Königin der Nacht mit ihren halsbrecherischen Koloraturen. Augenblicklich erwacht in Tamino die Liebe zu jener Prinzessin, die es aus den Fängen Sarastros – Gegenspieler der rachsüchtigen Königin – zu befreien gilt. Und dann ist da noch der lustige Vogelfänger Papageno – Vogelhändler in Diensten der Königin. Mit Papageno an seiner Seite, mit Zauberflöte und Glockenspiel im Gepäck, begibt sich Tamino auf eine Prüfungsreise, um Pamina zu gewinnen. Drei Knaben begleiten die beiden. Schnell wird klar, dass eben nicht klar ist, wer gut und wer böse ist, ehe am Ende die Stärke siegt. „Sie krönet zum Lohn die Schönheit und Weisheit mit ewiger Kron‘!“ Fröhliches und tief zu Herzen Gehendes, Weihevolles, Magisches und Dramatisches verbinden sich in der „Zauberflöte“ zu einem an Farbigkeit nicht zu überbietenden Tableau!
