The power of love triumphs over the love of power: a utopia that fails.

Tchaikovsky's seventh opera develops like a thriller in four parts. It combines a drama of love and jealousy with political intrigues and religious entanglements, showing the powerlessness of the powerful as well as the opportunism of the people. The plot revolves around an outsider. The widow Nastasia, called Kuma, runs an inn outside the city of Nizhny Novgorod, where all social classes meet. She fascinates the guests with her openness and her desire for freedom. Mamyrov, a scheming cleric and adviser to the prince, accuses Kuma of sorcery and charges her with immorality. He gets the lord to inspect Kuma's guests, but she manages to win the lord over and ridicule his advisor. While Mamyrov stirs up the princess's jealousy, the prince tries to force Kuma to love. But she has fallen in love with Juri, the son of the royal couple. So Kuma becomes the plaything of a dysfunctional ruling family. In the end she is poisoned by the hysterical princess. The jealous prince in turn kills his son and goes insane.

Charodeyka - literally translated "The Enchanting One" - was written between Eugene Onegin and the Queen of Spades and is rarely performed to this day, although Tchaikovsky himself considered it his best work. The score shines and shows a progressive music dramatist with different faces: according to the dramatic action, he chooses different musical means act for act. Passionate characters, sensitive melodies, brilliant orchestration and dramatic ensemble scenes confirm his unconditional love for "his" sorceress.
