For the first time in Russia
The Epiphany Festival 2023 opens with a landmark event: the first Russian performance of the opera Doctor Atom by contemporary American composer John Adams (b. 1947).
 
The protagonist of the work is the theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, within the framework of which the first samples of nuclear weapons were developed during the Second World War. The action takes place at a test site in New Mexico on the eve of the first test on July 16, 1945.

The opera "Doctor Atom" (2005) became the final part of the trilogy by J. Adams, which also included "Nixon in China" (1987) - an opera about the visit of US President Richard Nixon to China in 1972, "The Death of Klinghoffer" (1991) - opera about the capture of the liner "Achille Lauro". These compositions are called
CNN operas, a term associated with the news programs of the CNN television company and emphasizing the choice of stories on hot topics. But the composer himself rejects such a definition.

Adams explained that the music was written under the influence of R. Wagner's "The Death of the Gods", and "Doctor Atom", with its constant feeling of the approaching end, looks like his answer to the great predecessor. Peter Sellars, libretto writer and director of the 2005 premiere, agrees: “This is our generation's Godfall, with our speed, with our moments of tension, our nervous energy. But nothing is a metaphor, everything is a reality.”

In the libretto, Sellars combined various sources: wartime letters, memoirs, declassified government documents, petitions, as well as ancient Indian texts (in one of the scenes, the choir sings about the vision of the Hindu god Vishnu as the destroyer of the world) and the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, John Donne, Muriel Rukeyser. It is known that Oppenheimer knew many verses by heart, and when he read J. Donne's Sacred Sonnet XIV "Break my heart, three-faced God" to nuclear physicists, they decided to call the first test Trinity ("Trinity").

The apocalyptic scale of the problem and the acute conflict inherent in the plot determined the musical language of the opera. It is much harsher and more dissonant than Adams' usual language, with minimalist chord patterns combined with atypical clustering consonances.

The world premiere of the opera in San Francisco was dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Then performances took place in Amsterdam, Chicago, as well as at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Adams later revised the opera into a symphony.

Крещенский фестиваль – 2023 открывается знаковым событием: первым российским исполнением оперы «Доктор Атом» современного американского композитора Джона Адамса (род. 1947).
 
Главный герой произведения – физик-теоретик Роберт Оппенгеймер, научный руководитель Манхэттенского проекта, в рамках которого во время Второй мировой войны разрабатывались первые образцы ядерного оружия. Действие происходит на полигоне в штате Нью-Мексико накануне первого испытания 16 июля 1945 года.

Опера «Доктор Атом» (2005) стала заключительной частью трилогии Дж. Адамса, в которую также вошли «Никсон в Китае» (1987) – опера о визите президента США Ричарда Никсона в Китай в 1972 году, «Смерть Клингхоффера» (1991) – опера о захвате лайнера «Акилле Лауро». Эти сочинения называют
CNN-операми – термином, ассоциативно связанным с новостными программами телекомпании CNN и подчеркивающим выбор сюжетов на остроактуальные темы. Но сам композитор отвергает такое определение.

Адамс пояснял, что музыка написана под влиянием «Гибели богов» Р. Вагнера, и «Доктор Атом» с его постоянным ощущением приближающегося конца выглядит его ответом великому предшественнику. С этой мыслью соглашается и Питер Селларс, автор либретто и режиссер премьерной постановки 2005 года: «Это “Гибель богов” нашего поколения, с нашей скоростью, с нашими моментами напряжения, нашей нервной энергией. Но ничто не является метафорой, всё – реальность».

В либретто Селларс объединил разные источники: письма военного времени, мемуары, рассекреченные правительственные документы, петиции, а также древние индийские тексты (в одной из сцен хор поет о видении главному герою индуистского бога Вишну как разрушителя мира) и поэзию Шарля Бодлера, Джона Донна, Мюриэль Рукейзер. Известно, что Оппенгеймер знал на память множество стихов, и когда он прочел физикам-ядерщикам Священный сонет XIV Дж. Донна «Разбей мое сердце, трехликий Бог», они решили назвать первое испытание Trinity («Троица»).

Апокалиптический масштаб проблемы и заложенный в сюжете острый конфликт определили музыкальный язык оперы. Он намного более жесткий и диссонантный, чем привычный язык Адамса, минималистические аккордовые паттерны сочетаются с нетипичными для минимализма созвучиями-кластерами.

Мировая премьера оперы в Сан-Франциско была приурочена к 60-летию бомбардировок Хиросимы и Нагасаки. Затем состоялись постановки в Амстердаме, Чикаго, а также в Метрополитен-опере в Нью-Йорке. Позже Адамс переработал оперу в симфонию.
