Верди дълго време замисля създаване на опера по драмата на Шилер „Дон Карлос". За това допринася и посещението му в Испания през 1863 г. по повод постановката на операта „Силата на съдбата". Тогава той отива в замъка Ескориал, който му прави много потискащо впечатление.

Либретото на „Дон Карлос" е написано от Жозеф Мери (1798–1866) и Камий дю Локл (1832–1903). Общият дух на драмата е запазен. По желание на Верди в самото начало е прибавена една картина, за да се изясни по-добре развитието на действието. Мери и дю Локл написват либретото в духа на френската голяма опера — в пет действия, с традиционния балет и всички други подробности, утвърдени от тогавашния „директор на музикалната мода" във Франция Джакомо Майербер.

Верди с желание започва да пише „Дон Карлос". Борбата на италианския народ за освобождение, както и ожесточените схватки между светската и църковната власт в неговата родина, които пречат за обединението на Италия, напомнят събитията, пресъздадени в драмата на Шилер. За творбата си композиторът отбелязва: „Тази опера се ражда сред огън и пожари."

„Дон Карлос" се изнася за първи път на 11 март 1867 г. в парижката Гранд опера с изключителен успех. На следната година се играе и в Германия в преработка на М. Р. Беер. По това време Занардини прави нова редакция на „Дон Карлос", предназначена за Италия. През 1883 г. Верди преработва „Дон Карлос", като доста я съкращава. Текстът е преправен чувствително от Гисланцони, автор на либретото на „Аида". В тоя си вид операта е изнесена в Милано на 10 януари 1884 г. Така тя и до днес се играе в Италия.

Verdi conceived for a long time to write an opera after Schiller's drama Don Karlos. To that contributed his visit in Spain in 1863, on the occasion of the production of the opera La forza del destino. Then he went to the palace of El Escorial which produced a very oppressive impression on him.
The libretto of Don Carlos was written by Joseph Méry (1798-1866) and Camille du Locle (1832-1903). The general spirit of the drama was kept. By Verdi's request, in the very beginning was added one scene in order to make the progress of the action clearer. Méry and Du Locle wrote the libretto in the spirit of the French Grand Opera - in five acts, with the traditional ballet and all the rest of the details approved by Giacomo Meyerbeer, "director of music fashion" in France of that time.

Verdi composed Don Carlos with great desire. The fight of the Italian people for liberation, as well as the fierce skirmish between secular and church authority in his motherland which were obstructive to the unification of Italy remind us of the events reproduced in Schiller's drama. For his work the composer shared: "This opera was born among fire and blaze".

Don Carlos was produced for the first time on 11 March 1867, at the Paris Grand Opera with an exceptional success. The next year, it was performed also in Germany in the version of M. R. Beer. At that time, Zanardini made a new version of Don Carlo designed for Italy. In 1883, Verdi revised Don Carlo by shortening it quite much. The text was considerably rehashed by Ghislanzoni, the author of Aida's libretto. In this form, the opera was staged in Milan on 10 January 1884. That way it is being performed in Italy up to the present days.
