«Дон Карлос», наряду с «Аидой» и шекспировскими шедеврами «Отелло» и «Фальстафом», принадлежит к величайшим творениям Верди. Получив заказ от директора парижской Гранд-опера, композитор обратился к пьесе одного из своих любимых драматургов, Шиллера. Либреттисты Мери и Дю Локль разработали сюжет по правилам французской «большой оперы» с её традиционной пятиактной структурой и обязательным балетом. Созданное Верди «живое, мощное произведение, сотворённое из золота, грязи, желчи и крови» (так откликнулся на премьеру Бизе) не могло не прийти в противоречие со вкусами парижской публики. В 1868 году, спустя всего полтора года после французской премьеры, «Дон Карлос» был представлен в петербургском Большом театре в исполнении итальянской труппы. Однако Верди оставался неудовлетворённым. Не будучи более связан канонами парижской сцены, он сократил балет в начале III действия, а также встречу Карлоса и Елизаветы в лесу Фонтенбло, зато добавил один из наиболее ярких ансамблей — дуэт Филиппа и Родриго. Премьера новой четырёхактной версии с итальянским текстом Гисланцони (либреттиста «Аиды») состоялась в Ла Скала в 1884 году.

После первой постановки в Петербурге «Дон Карлос» был запрещён на русской сцене из цензурных соображений. Лишь в 1917 году Шаляпин добился возвращения оперы в московский Большой театр и выступил в роли Филиппа, став непревзойдённым её исполнителем.

В Мариинском театре «Дон Карлос» впервые появился в 1976 году, в миланской редакции — в 1992-м и 1999 годах. В 2012 году состоялась премьера пятиактной моденской версии, включающей сцену в Фонтенбло.

Приморская сцена Мариинского театра представляет исторический спектакль режиссёра Юрия Александрова в сценографии Теймураза Мурванидзе. Эта великолепная постановка оформлена с мрачной пышностью: массивные декорации воссоздают облик и атмосферу Эскориала — дворца-монастыря Филиппа II, который называют и восьмым чудом света, и архитектурным кошмаром. Роскошные костюмы Татьяны Ногиновой словно сошли с полотен великих живописцев испанского двора.

Основная идея спектакля следует замыслу Верди: в государстве Филиппа нет места человеческим чувствам и свободе, и сам король в нём трагически одинок. «Большая опера больших страстей», как верно характеризуют «Дон Карлоса», — это история о загубленной любви. Судьба всех без исключения главных героев несчастна, и только в финальном дуэте Карлоса и Елизаветы наступает просветление: влюблённые верят в своё посмертное соединение на небесах. Гипертрофированные страсти гений Верди передаёт не столько в ариях-«портретах», сколько в драматических ансамблях-«столкновениях» персонажей.

Театральность оперы определяется предельной поляризацией образов: Дон Карлоса и Филиппа, Елизаветы и Эболи. Особое положение занимает Родриго, располагаясь как бы на пересечении этих смысловых координат: ведь он и друг Карлоса, и доверенное лицо короля. Большую роль в музыкальной драматургии оперы играют массовые сцены и оркестр. Выразительные контуры вокальных мелодий оттеняются инструментальными голосами, суровый колорит церковных песнопений прослеживается в хоралах медных духовых. Подчёркнутые контрасты сопоставления отдельных групп придают звучанию оркестра патетику ораторского высказывания.

Don Carlos, along with Aida and Shakespeare's masterpieces Othello and Falstaff, belongs to Verdi's greatest works. Having received an order from the director of the Paris Grand Opera, the composer turned to the play of one of his favorite playwrights, Schiller. Librettists Mary and Du Locle developed the plot according to the rules of the French “grand opera” with its traditional five-act structure and obligatory ballet. The “living, powerful work created by Verdi, created from gold, dirt, bile and blood” (this is how Bizet responded to the premiere) could not help but come into conflict with the tastes of the Parisian public. In 1868, just a year and a half after the French premiere, Don Carlos was presented at the St. Petersburg Bolshoi Theater performed by an Italian troupe. However, Verdi remained unsatisfied. No longer bound by the canons of the Parisian stage, he shortened the ballet at the beginning of Act III, as well as the meeting of Carlos and Elizabeth in the forest of Fontainebleau, but added one of the most striking ensembles - the duet of Philip and Rodrigo. The premiere of the new four-act version with Italian text by Ghislanzoni (librettist of Aida) took place at La Scala in 1884.

After the first production in St. Petersburg, Don Carlos was banned on the Russian stage for censorship reasons. Only in 1917 Chaliapin achieved the return of the opera to the Moscow Bolshoi Theater and performed in the role of Philip, becoming its unsurpassed performer.

Don Carlos first appeared at the Mariinsky Theater in 1976, in the Milan edition in 1992 and 1999. In 2012, a five-act Modena version premiered, including a scene at Fontainebleau.

The Primorsky stage of the Mariinsky Theater presents a historical performance directed by Yuri Alexandrov with scenography by Teimuraz Murvanidze. This magnificent production is staged with dark opulence, with massive sets that recreate the appearance and atmosphere of El Escorial, the palace-monastery of Philip II, which has been called both the eighth wonder of the world and an architectural nightmare. Tatyana Noginova’s luxurious costumes seem to have come straight from the paintings of the great painters of the Spanish court.

The main idea of ​​the play follows Verdi's plan: in Philip's state there is no place for human feelings and freedom, and the king himself is tragically alone in it. “The Grand Opera of Great Passions,” as Don Carlos is correctly described, is a story about ruined love. The fate of all the main characters without exception is unhappy, and only in the final duet of Carlos and Elizabeth does enlightenment occur: the lovers believe in their posthumous union in heaven. Verdi’s genius conveys exaggerated passions not so much in arias-“portraits”, but in dramatic ensembles-“clashes” of characters.

The theatricality of the opera is determined by the extreme polarization of the images: Don Carlos and Philip, Elizabeth and Eboli. Rodrigo occupies a special position, being located, as it were, at the intersection of these semantic coordinates: after all, he is both a friend of Carlos and a confidant of the king. Crowd scenes and the orchestra play a major role in the musical dramaturgy of the opera. The expressive contours of vocal melodies are set off by instrumental voices, the harsh coloring of church chants can be seen in the brass chorales. The emphasized contrasts of juxtaposition of individual groups give the sound of the orchestra the pathos of an oratorical statement.
