The second collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte was destined for Prague where the success of the Nozze had been such that a new order was placed in 1787. The result was this absolute masterpiece, Il dissoluto punito ossia il Don Giovanni , l opera which, with Die Zauberflöte, would shine in a unique way on the future. It is about love, a permanent theme in Mozart. Don Giovanniis unique because it does not involve real couples in love. The tasty "air of the catalog" is only a comical but accounting inventory. There is no love duet. Even the famous “La ci darem la mano” is closer to an erotic promise than a declaration. Here, love is one-sided. Ottavio loves Anna who makes him feel bad. The young Masetto loves the sassy Zerlina and Elvira loves Don Giovanni who doesn't love any… but wants them all! A meditation on love and seduction ...
