Its libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte, the translator of the Hungarian text was György Uhrman.

The masked Don Giovanni sneaks into the room of the governor's daughter, Donna Anna, but she rejects the unknown. The governor also wakes up to the noise and challenges him to a duel. The knight stabs him and runs away. Anna and her betrothed swear revenge, as does Donna Elvira, who comes to town and was seduced by the knight and then left by a wooden image. Don Giovanni is setting his sights on the pretty young bride, Zerlina, when Anna, Elvira and Ottavio appear. The knight unlocks a wheel, and then in his arrogance invites the statue standing on the governor's tomb to dinner...

Don Giovanni is the archetype of the high-strung adventurer. It is said that Mozart even consulted Casanova when writing the opera.

Mozart's opera was praised by the greatest in European cultural history. Kierkegaard categorically states that "among all classical works, Mozart's Don Juan deserves the first place". Schiller writes to Goethe: "I always hoped that a nobler form of tragedy would emerge from the opera." Mire Goethe: "Recently, he could have seen his hope for the opera perfectly fulfilled in Don Juan, but unfortunately, with Mozart's death, all prospects for something like this were dashed."

In György Spiro 's novel Ikszek, the following apt explanation is given. This opera is about “Don Giovanni, this unscrupulous womanizer, is right, and honest people turn out to be complete fools. Don Giovanni is the embodiment of so-called freedom against all societies.”

Az álarcos Don Giovanni a kormányzó lányának, Donna Annának a szobájába lopódzik, ám a lány elutasítja az ismeretlent. A zajra a kormányzó is felébred és párbajra hívja. A lovag leszúrja és elmenekül. Anna és jegyese bosszút esküszik, csakúgy, mint a városba érkező Donna Elvira, akit a lovag elcsábított, majd faképnél hagyott. Don Giovanni épp a csinos fiatal menyasszonyra, Zerlinára vet szemet, amikor felbukkan Anna, Elvira és Ottavio. A lovag kereket old, majd elbizakodottságában a kormányzó sírján álló szobrát hívja meg vacsorára…

Don Giovanni a feslett életű kalandor archetípusa. Állítólag Mozart az opera írásakor még Casanovával is konzultált.

Mozart operáját az európai kultúrtörténet legnagyobbjai méltatták. Kierkegaard kategorikusan kijelenti, hogy „valamennyi klasszikus alkotás között Mozart Don Juanját illeti meg az első hely”. Schiller azt írja Goethének: „Mindig reméltem, hogy a tragédia nemesebb formája az operából bontakozik ki.” Mire Goethe: „Az operával kapcsolatos reményét nemrégiben a Don Juan-ban tökéletesen beteljesülve láthatta volna, sajnos azonban Mozart halálával dugába dőlt minden kilátás valami ehhez hasonlóra.”

Spiró György Ikszek című regényében a következő találó okfejtés hangzik el. Ez az opera arról szól, hogy „Don Giovanninak, ennek a gátlástalan nőcsábásznak van igaza, és a becsületes emberekről kiderül, hogy tökkelütött hülyék. Don Giovanni az úgynevezett szabadság megtestesítője minden társadalommal szemben.”
