Dostoevsky claimed that Cervantes' Don Quixote is the greatest book of all created by the genius of man. Indeed, the place this novel has occupied in the history of world culture is unique. No wonder its circulation is second only to that of the Bible. Refuting his own opinion that “it is impossible to compose a book that would satisfy everyone,” Cervantes became the author of a work for all times, all peoples and all ages. The very name of its title character has acquired a nominal meaning. Dynamic, carried away by the idea of ​​progress, Europeans learned from the Knight of the Sad Image to simultaneously be in perpetual motion and remain faithful to yesterday, follow the arguments of reason and prove their case, regardless of the ability to approve it. The idea of ​​saving perishing humanity, replacing moral values ​​with material ones,

“O Don Quixote of La Mancha, how sweet he is to my heart, how I love him! It reminds me of dear Russia, ”Fyodor Chaliapin admitted. The performing arts of the brilliant singer prompted the director of the Monte-Carlo Opera to order in 1909 a composition especially for him. The French composer Jules Massenet enthusiastically accepted this proposal: Chaliapin was the recognized master of operatic thoughts, and his participation guaranteed success in advance. In addition, Massenet sympathized with the talented singer Lucy Arbel, dreaming of giving her an interesting role. The composer turned not to Cervantes' novel itself, but to Lorrain's play The Knight of the Sad Image, who turned a rude tavern maid into a feminine, coquettish Beautiful Dulcinea - a true Frenchwoman. Having exalted Dulcinea, Lorrain also exalted the image of Don Quixote in love with her, focusing on chivalrous love and exploits for the sake of the beloved. So the multidimensional novel of Cervantes was projected into Massenet's music with one of its facets, becoming a "heroic comedy" with features of the French lyric opera.

Don Quixote by Massenet is a very beautiful and unusual composition. Possessing extensive musical erudition, the composer subtly plays with stylization and quotation. Working on the order in his declining years, Massenet could not help thinking about the inevitability of death, and there is a “refined despair” in the opera, skillfully hidden behind bright and sparkling music. The scene of Don Quixote's farewell to life is recognized as the most expressive in terms of its impact, the humble grandeur of which invariably brings tears to the eyes of the audience. A recognized master of musical theatre, French director of Greek origin Yannis Kokkos created an atmospheric production imbued with Spanish flavor and carnival elements. In his performance, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza on horseback and donkey look as if they had just stepped off the famous monument to Cervantes in Madrid. The leitmotif of the production is a gigantic book that, like Cervantes' novel, never leaves its characters and audience. The scenery is made according to the principle of "shadow theater", where reality and dreams exist in parallel, as in the world of Don Quixote.

«О Дон Кихот Ламанчский, как он мил моему сердцу, как я его люблю! Он напоминает мне дорогую Россию», — признавался Фёдор Шаляпин. Исполнительское искусство гениального певца побудило директора Оперы Монте-Карло заказать в 1909 году сочинение специально для него. Французский композитор Жюль Массне с восторгом принял это предложение: Шаляпин был признанным властителем оперных дум, и его участие заранее гарантировало успех. Кроме того Массне симпатизировал талантливой певице Люси Арбель, мечтая подарить ей интересную роль. Композитор обратился не к самому роману Сервантеса, а к пьесе «Рыцарь Печального Образа» Лоррена, превратившего грубую трактирную служанку в женственную кокетливую Прекрасную Дульсинею — истинную француженку. Возвысив Дульсинею, Лоррен возвысил и образ влюблённого в неё Дона Кихота, сосредоточившись на рыцарской любви и подвигах ради возлюбленной. Так многомерный роман Сервантеса спроецировался в музыку Массне одной своей гранью, став «героической комедией» с чертами французской лирической оперы.

«Дон Кихот» Массне — очень красивое и необычное сочинение. Обладая обширной музыкальной эрудицией, композитор тонко играет стилизацией и цитированием. Работая над заказом на склоне лет, Массне не мог не задумываться о неизбежности смерти, — и в опере присутствует «изысканное отчаяние», умело скрытое за яркой и искромётной музыкой. Самой выразительной по силе воздействия признана сцена прощания Дон Кихота с жизнью, смиренное величие которой неизменно вызывает слёзы на глазах у аудитории. Признанный мэтр музыкального театра, французский режиссёр греческого происхождения Яннис Коккос создал атмосферную постановку, пронизанную испанским колоритом и карнавальной стихией. В его спектакле Дон Кихот и Санчо Панса верхом на коне и ослике выглядят так, словно только что сошли со знаменитого памятника Сервантесу в Мадриде. Лейттмотивом постановки становится гигантская книга, которая, подобно роману Сервантеса, никогда не покидает своих героев и аудиторию. Декорации выполнены по принципу «театра теней», где реальность и грёзы существуют параллельно, как в мире Дон Кихота.
