Alexander Soddy conducts Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 and Fazil Say soloes in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest slaat een muzikale brug tussen de nieuwe en de oude wereld. Van het oeroude schiereiland Anatolië tot het jazzy Amerika van begin 20e eeuw, met zelfs een vleugje Duke Ellington. Alexander Soddy dirigeert Dvořáks Symfonie nr. 9 en Fazil Say soleert in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

De beroemde Turkse pianist Fazil Say is al jaren een toonaangevend pianist die ook als componist grote bekendheid heeft gekregen. Hij speelt twee werken waarin de oude en nieuwe wereld elkaar ontmoeten. Het jazzy Rhapsody in Blue van Gershwin is bij uitstek muziek uit de nieuwe wereld. Daartegenover staat Silence of Anatolia waarin Say een sfeertekening schept van Anatolië, de oeroude aanduiding van het Turks schiereiland waar de wortels van de westerse beschaving liggen.

Dirigent Alexander Soddy brengt met het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest beide werelden bij elkaar in een uitvoering van Dvořáks beroemde Negende symfonie. Als Tsjechisch componist uit het ‘oude’ Europa componeerde hij deze symfonie, geïnspireerd op zijn muzikale indrukken van het ‘nieuwe’ Amerika waar hij enkele jaren woonde. Het is een fascinerend samenspel van Amerikaanse volksmuziek, spirituals en melodieën van de oorspronkelijke bewoners, gecombineerd met onvervalste Boheemse ritmes en motieven. Een echte symfonie ‘Uit de nieuwe wereld’.

 

Waar je Dvořáks Negende kunt zien als voorloper van de jazz, beginnen we het concert gepast jazzy met Duke Ellingtons Sophisticated Lady in een versie voor orkest van de jonge Nederlandse componist Xavier van de Poll.
