Let’s embark on a gaudy spree
The grandest in history!

Give me a splash
Of pedigreed hooch

USA, 1923: c’est la Prohibition. George Remus, devenu immensément riche en vendant illégalement de l’alcool et en développant un réseau de bars clandestins,offre à la haute société des fêtes somptueuses sur lesquelles règne sa femme, Imogene. Mais Mabel Willebrandt - vice-procureure de l’Etat d’Ohio - met tout en œuvre pour inculper Remus, qui finit derrière les barreaux. Il supplie alors sa femme de séduire
Franklin Dodge, l’inspecteur en charge de son dossier, afin de l’aider à sortir de là. Mais tout dérape…

 

Cette histoire vraie évoque les années folles, la naissance du jazz, de la liberté d’expression et des entraves que celle-ci doit parfois affronter. Elle relate également l’invention des concepts d’évasion fiscale, de folie passagère et de la distinction juridique entre féminicide et crime passionnel. Le procès Remus passionna toute l’Amérique de l’époque, via la presse people naissante, inspirant même F. Scott Fitzgerald pour la rédaction de son chef-d’œuvre, Gatsby le Magnifique.


Plus de trente interprètes évoquent sur scène un monde de fête et d’aspiration à la liberté, à jamais révolu, mais si proche du nôtre malgré le siècle qui nous sépare.

USA, 1923: Prohibition. George Remus, who became immensely rich by illegally selling alcohol and developing a network of speakeasy bars, offers high society lavish parties over which his wife, Imogene, reigns. But Mabel Willebrandt - deputy district attorney of the State of Ohio - does everything possible to indict Remus, who ends up behind bars. He then begs his wife to seduce
Franklin Dodge, the inspector in charge of his case, in order to help him get out of there. But everything goes wrong...

 

This true story evokes the Roaring Twenties, the birth of jazz, freedom of expression and the obstacles that it sometimes has to face. It also relates the invention of the concepts of tax evasion, temporary insanity and the legal distinction between femicide and crime of passion. The Remus trial fascinated all of America at the time, via the emerging celebrity press, even inspiring F. Scott Fitzgerald to write his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby.


More than thirty performers evoke on stage a world of celebration and aspiration for freedom, forever gone, but so close to ours despite the century that separates us.
