This work for orchestra, choir and two soloists, built on words from Holy Scripture, was premiered in 1868. It is the longest running and one of the most beloved and inspired works by Johannes Brahms. Instead of the Latin text traditionally used in the Catholic requiem Mass , the composer chose to use Luther's German Bible as a literary base.

Some believe that the inner impulse for Ein Deutsches Requiem ( A German Requiem ) was born out of the enormous pain Brahms felt after his mother's death in 1865. Others put Robert Schumann's death in 1856 as an inspiration. In fact, this would explain the calming and luminous character that runs through almost the entire score. Excerpts such as the opening chorus (text from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew ), or the very inspired excerpt Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit (text from the Gospel according to Saint John ) are clear examples of this.
