One of the first acts of the new management of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo was the launch of a series of concerts intended to enrich the universe of the choir of the Opéra and to reveal to the public the extent of its abilities. After Rossini's Stabat Mater last season and Verdi's Requiem this season, it's the turn of A German Requiemby Johannes Brahms to be presented in this context. Between 1857 and 1868, the composer was devastated by the disappearance of two loved ones: that of Robert Schumann, his mentor, then that of his own mother. These two events will push him to develop what will become his passport to glory. Created in 1869, this sacred work, but not liturgical, opened up to him the world of symphonic music, a universe he had hitherto hesitated to embrace. Even if the desire of its author to make it an ecumenical work could not materialize, its humanist character transpires through an inspired writing, vibrant with more than ostentatious inner emotions. Halfway between the Baroque funeral cantata in its form and the Romantic oratorio in its numbers, A German Requiemis an ideal work to allow the Musicians of the Prince – Monaco, led by Gianluca Capuano, to fully restore the sounds of the period thanks to their sensitive approach to 19th century music.

Un des premiers actes de la nouvelle direction de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo fut le lancement d’une série de concerts destinée à enrichir l’univers du chœur de l’Opéra et à dévoiler au public l’étendue de ses capacités. Après le Stabat Mater de Rossini la saison dernière et le Requiem de Verdi cette saison, c’est au tour d’Un requiem allemand de Johannes Brahms d’être présenté dans ce cadre. Entre 1857 et 1868, le compositeur est bouleversé par la disparition de deux êtres proches : celle de Robert Schumann, son mentor, puis celle de sa propre mère. Ces deux événements le pousseront à élaborer ce qui deviendra son passeport pour la gloire. Créée en 1869, cette œuvre sacrée, mais pas liturgique, lui ouvrira le monde de la musique symphonique, un univers qu’il avait jusque-là hésité à embrasser. Même si la volonté de son auteur d’en faire une œuvre œcuménique n’a pu se concrétiser, son caractère humaniste transpire au travers d’une écriture inspirée, vibrante d’émotions intérieures plus qu’ostentatoires. À mi-chemin entre la cantate funèbre baroque par sa forme et l’oratorio romantique par son effectif, Un requiem allemand est une œuvre idéale pour permettre aux Musiciens du Prince – Monaco, menés par Gianluca Capuano, de restituer pleinement les sonorités d’époque grâce à leur approche sensible de la musique du XIXe siècle.
